May 15, 2012 – Chan Sung Jung is the UFC’s human highlight reel.

In 2011, the “Korean Zombie” authored two of MMA’s most memorable moments, producing the first Twister submission win in UFC history, and later scoring a 7-second knockout. In his first fight of 2012, he once again put on a show, this time on UFC on FUEL 3. Jung didn’t just upset favorite Dustin Poirier in the main event, he also made a nice payday, earning two bonus awards for his brilliant winning performance.

Jung captured the Submission of the Night for his fourth-round D’arce choke victory, and he and Poirier earned Fight of the Night for their battle.

The two awards were worth an extra $80,000 on top of his contracted fight purse. He has now won nightly awards in all three of his UFC bouts.

Jung became the first fighter ever to stop Poirier in the process, and afterward, asked for a fight with featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

Until the main event, it seemed a lock that a wild light-heavyweight scrap between Igor Pokrajac and Fabio Maldonado seemed destined for the Fight of the Night prize, only to be outdone.

Meanwhile, middleweight Tom Lawlor earned the $40,000 Knockout of the Night award after knocking out Jason MacDonald in just 50 seconds. Lawlor hurt him badly with a straight left, and then finished him with a right hook behind the ear.

Long rumored to be in the pipeline, we finally have our first evidence of the highly anticipated BMW M5 M Performance Edition, albeit one that only lasts 32 seconds.

This video, which was released by BMW, is effectively the teaser before the introduction of the M5 M Performance Edition. Not a lot of details were shared about the special edition models, except that we can expect it to come in three distinct color schemes with only 30 available models.

Do the math and that should equate to 10 models for each color.

BMW is throwing the automotive world for a loop in the coming years as a few of their models will be getting name changes to make room for a denser lineup. We already know the future 3-Series Coupe and Convertible will be sold as a 4-Series and now the future generation 1-Series Coupe and Convertible will also be getting a name change: They will adopt the 2-Series nomenclature. The future 2-Series Coupe has already been rendered so it was high time for us to get the 2-Series Convertible a little attention.

The BMW 2-Series Convertible will arrive a few months after its coupe brother and will be sportier than the current 1-Series. Under the hood, there will only be four-cylinder engines: a 2.0 petrol with either 150 HP, 177 HP, or 218 HP and a 2.0 turbodiesel with 214 HP. These engines will be combined with either a six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. An xDrive system will also be offered to make the car even more fuel efficient.

Expect to see the new BMW 2-Series Convertible launched in late 2013.

May 13, 2012 – There are two separate worlds in professional sports. The one with the money, bright lights and headlines, and the one that lies beneath it all, where the true talent separates itself from the pack while the wannabes try to hold on to a dream.

The latter is a proving ground, a necessary stop on the way to stardom or an unwanted roadblock on the way to obscurity. It is also the landscape examined by the new documentary “Fightville,” which was recently given a limited release in US theaters.

Beyond that, it is a portrait of two lives in flux, centered on the careers of a pair of aspiring MMA stars. To fans of the UFC, the star of the movie is Dustin Poirier, the fast-rising featherweight who happens to be fighting in the main event of Tuesday’s UFC on FUEL 3. In the film — shot over the course of one year from mid-2009 to mid-2010 — Poirier is depicted as a hard-working kid from a hard-scrabble background, using his talent to overcome a rough start in life and head to the bigtime. All the while, the filmmakers tell the parallel story of Albert Stainback, a 20-something with a tortured youth and a dream of a worry-free future.

The contrast between the two is subtle but striking. They both have the same goal, they both come from similar backgrounds, they both end up at the same gym, Gladiators Academy in Lafayette, Louisiana, but that’s where their paths separate.

While Poirier illustrates unwavering dedication to his personal improvement to go with his natural talent, Stainback seems to spend more time talking about his goals than putting in the time necessary to achieve them.

The brutal truths about success or failure in the sport are immediately brought to the forefront by their trainer, UFC veteran Tim Credeur, who notes that the current MMA movement represents the natural evolution of martial arts. After years of outrageous claims from practitioners of various disciplines, MMA has managed to separate the legitimate from the pretenders.

“To make it for everyone is to make it not what it really is,” he says.

The same holds true for individuals, as Stainback learns.

The Kentucky native comes across as a complex and sympathetic character. Early on in the film, he recalls his father beating his mother senseless. Later, when he was nine, his father committed suicide.

“I honestly attribute me wanting to fight, if I had to give some kind of Freudian guess at it, is I wanted to be a defender,” he says.

Stainback is clearly intelligent. He is introspective, well-spoken and it seems, well-read, since he clearly harbors a fascination with Alex from the 1960s novel “A Clockwork Orange.”

Yet as bright as he is, he can’t keep from getting in the way of his own success. After winning his pro debut, he is booked for a rematch, but because of relationship issues and stress, he loses the desire to get into the gym to train. As a result, he is forced out of the fight.

“It sucks knowing that I let something like this go by,” he says. “It might be small, it might be big, but it was there.”

All the while, Poirier is seizing the moment, training for the same show, his determination unwavering. We see him making sacrifices in his diet to make weight, and we see his work ethic, and it’s clear what the difference is between the two.

The most powerful shot in the movie comes when Poirier goes off to Canada to fight. He wins in a flash, and as he celebrates, the scene cuts to Steinback watching video of Poirier’s win while back home. As Poirier basks in the glory of a victory that sends him to his dream job — he soon after signed a contract with Zuffa — Steinback has literally and figuratively been left behind.

While MMA enthusiasts are no doubt Fightville’s most likely audience, it’s biggest importance is to non-fans, for a look at the dedication it takes to succeed as well as the real people and real ambition behind an often-misunderstood sport. MMA is ultimately both simple and complex; a fight with many layers of depth. Because of that, it will never be for everyone. But as Fightville teaches through Poirier’s resolve, once you get past the sport’s proving grounds, it can lead to a little slice of the American Dream.

Not being a women, never having been discriminated against in the job market due to my gender and having taken advantage of the premium paid to men, I’m not sure I’m in the best position to answer that question. My take is that in the wine industry, as in many others, women are more likely to be viewed as less capable due to their gender alone, than are men. Economically, that tendency advantages me. And yet I don’t understand the origin of that tendency. Were I a woman who had seen or felt discrimination due only to the fact that I was not a man, I’d probably want to join a group of women that had my vocational back.

Sarah, it’s two parts inspiration, one part curiosity and one part self indulgence. I’m blessed with the “what-the-heck-does-that-mean” gene that forces my mind to gaze in many different directions. This kind of curiosity has been a blessing for me because it serves to spur inspiration. Because I know I want to maintain this blog, when I find myself fascinated with, say, the active discrimination against women at the Augusta Golf Club I allow myself to consider how that issue intersects with the world of wine. Usually, a connection of some sort is made that interests me. It’s that last part (that it interests me) that goes back to self-indulgence. I assume (probably incorrectly) that if it interests me, it will interests others. That’s shamefully self indulgent. But, it is a formula for generating consistent material for this blog. Write about what interests you without worry that it may not interest others.
